Abstract

Theory of mind (TOM) refers to the capacity to infer one's own and other persons' mental states. Several studies provide convincing evidence of a specific deficit in the theory of mind (ToM) m patients with schizophrema. The present study attempts to access role of chronicity on Theory of mind in schizophrenia patients. Total 25 patients with ICD-10 DOR diagnosis of schizophrenia were selected as sample for the study from the inpatient department. Theory of Mind Task was used for exploring TOM in Schizophrenia patients. To study the variables independent samples test and chi-square (2) test were used. There was no significant correlation found between duration of illness and Theory of mind in schizophrenia patients. Duration of illness does not influence the theory of mind deficit in schizophrenia patients. This study adds to the growing literature on ToM by suggesting that theory of mind deficit might represent a trait rather than a state marker in schizophrenia.

Abstract

Parental bonding is characterized by intense attachment between parents and children which contains the sense of trust, love, care, and affection. It has long been proposed that aspects of the parent-child relationship dispose the child to depression in adulthood. This study was undertaken to examine the parental bonding among individuals with recurrent depressive disorder and normal controls. The study was a cross sectional and the sample was recruited from July 2013 to Jan 2014 through consecutive sampling method. The sample was consisted of 30 patients with the diagnosis of recurrent depressive disorder as per ICD-10 and 30 normal controls. Age range for both groups was 18 to 50 years. Both groups were matched in terms of age, sex and education. To assess the seventy of depression Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression (HAM-D) and Parental Bonding Instrument and was used to assess the parental bonding in both the group. The two groups differed significantly in terms of mother and father care&protection. Low mother and father care and high mother and father protection was found in Recurrent Depressive Disorder (RDD) as compared to normal controls.

Abstract

Bipolar affective disorder is a devastating mental illness with alternating episodes of mania, depression and mixed mood states with some inter episodic recovery phase in between. Age of onset of this illness can be at any age from childhood to old age. Usually people get affected by this serious illness during their adolescence, hence this affect their study, career and marriage prospects. Damage caused by this illness is not just limited to social, occupational, familial and financial aspects. Fundamental cognitive functions like attention, memory and executive function required for a life time will get badly affected due to the psychotic nature of the illness and long term use of psychiatric medicines. At present in our country, treatment of bipolar affective disorder is grossly centered on pharmacological management with mood stabilizers and antipsychotics. This study is an elementary effort to incorporate cognitive rededication training in the current treatment regime of bipolar affective disorder in order to enhance cognitive functions and thereby improve quality of life and self-esteem of patients with bipolar disorder in remission.
